What you need before installing a WordPress Blog is a domain name and a hosting service. Even though WordPress.org is a free platform and has the most freedom, support and the easiest user interface you must have your own hosting service which will cost at least $6 a month and a domain name that will cost $10 a year.

Another important step you must have completed is what the niche, theme, ideology or message will be behind the blog. If you want it to simply be fist-pounding rants and obscure raves then so be it. That’s the freedom you’ll have with a self-hosted WordPress blog.

Now before you purchase your domain name it would be wise to fully understand your niche. Here’s what I mean by that.

  1. You don’t want to buy a domain name like karaterocks.com for a site that will be selling hand made Native America headdresses…
  2. When you decide on a domain name you want to place as many of the keywords you’ll be using within the domain name. here’s an example and we’ll use Native American Headdress. How does nativeamericanheaddress.com sound? Could it be thinned down even more? What if you were selling hand made Blackfoot Headdresses. How about blackfootindianheadress.com? see how it becomes an inch wide and a mile deep?

By the way, I checked GoDaddy.com and nativeamericanheaddress.com and blackfootindianheaddress.com is available if you want ‘em ;)
